Lower Limb Biomechanics and Orthotics Workshop
Presented by Brian Hoke, P.T., D.P.T., S.C.S.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • Evaluate foot / lower limb structure and function to identify structural faults and motion impairments and be able to relate this to the pathomechanics of overuse injuries.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of orthotic intervention.
  • Implement new methods of prescribing orthoses.
  • Select and prescribe orthoses appropriate to the patients? needs.
  • Appreciate orthoses therapy in the broader physiotherapy context
  • Integrate orthoses therapy into physical therapy management
Tissue Stress Theory Workshop
Presented by Tom McPoil, PT, PhD, FAPTA
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • Describe the functional anatomy and articular mechanics required for normal foot function during walking.
  • Discuss the Tissue Stress Model and those factors in the foot, ankle, and lower extremity that contribute to abnormal foot function.
  • Describe and perform a physical examination of the foot and ankle.
  • Assess static foot posture using the Foot Posture Index (FPI)
  • List and describe the functions of a foot orthoses.
  • Understand the procedures necessary to modify a pre-fabricated foot orthoses including molding and the application of posting.
  • Describe the optimal management for posterior tibial tendinitis, chronic plantar heel pain, and medial tibial stress syndrome based on best current evidence.
Saggital Plane, First Ray and Orthotics Workshop
Presented by Dr. Howard Dananberg, DPM
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • Participants will gain a thorough knowledge of sagittal plane biomechanical function, its importance in gait and its relationship to many common postural pathologies including chronic low back pain (CLBP).
  • Lower limb manipulation techniques to improve orthotic prescription and patient outcomes will be learned

Course Instructor: Noelle M. Austin MS, PT, CHT is a graduate of Quinnipiac University with a Bachelor?s of Science in Physical Therapy and later obtained her Master?s degree at the University of Connecticut with a special focus on Allied Health Education. She obtained her CHT in 1996. Noelle has been teaching the art and science of orthotic fabrication for over 18 years. In addition to conducting both national and private workshops, Noelle has been involved in product development and training of sales representatives for Patterson Medical (Sammons Preston). She writes a regular column on Orthotic Fabrication in Patterson Medical?s publication Rehab Insider. She has presented multiple pre-conferences at Annual ASHT meetings as well as various State Chapter Annual meetings on the topic of orthotic fabrication. She owns CJ Education and Consulting, LLC that is dedicated to providing quality clinical education for therapists around the country. For the past 16 years she has worked as a hand therapist at ProPT in Hamden, CT, she is also an active member of the American Society of Hand Therapists. Noelle is co-author and co-editor of the book: Orthotic Intervention for the Hand and Upper Extremity: Splinting Principles and Process published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2013. In addition, she wrote the chapter 'Wrist and Hand Complex' in the 5th edition of Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis (Levangie and Norkin) published by FA Davis in 2011. She also authored 'Orthotics in the Management of Hand Dysfunction' in the 3rd edition of Orthotics and Prosthetics in Rehabilitation (Lusardi and Nielsen) published by Elsevier 2012.
